City Archive

The archives of the city of Calw have the important task of preserving and researching the historical lore of the city. It has a stock of approx. 450 linear meters of historical archive material, which is continuously being expanded through the acquisition of written material and additions to the extensive collection of material on the city’s history. The holdings of the archives may be consulted by any citizen who can prove a legitimate interest, subject to any blocking periods. The archive also advises the administration on record keeping and document management.

Among the focal points of the holdings are the municipal records since the end of the 17th century, which represent important sources on the social history and economic importance of Calw from the 17th to the 19th century. The holdings are supplemented by valuable archival materials of non-municipal origin, such as estates or the archives of the famous Färberstift. The archive also has an extensive image archive and numerous maps and plans. The Calw daily press has been archived without gaps since its first issue in 1826 until today.

The City Archive also carries out a variety of historical education activities and publishes its own publications on the history of the city, such as the“Small Series – Online Shop“. Through the promotion and publication of research, the archive provides knowledge about the city’s history. Since the amendment of the Civil Status Act in 2009, the archive also preserves older civil status records and provides information from them, especially to family researchers. The archive ensures that the holdings are stored in a contemporary manner and, if necessary, has written material restored in order to preserve it in the long term.
